The Middle East is once again in focus throughout the world, as Israel has occupied Hamas-held Gaza, and is currently pulling back from its successful incursion into Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon. It seems that throughout its very existence since 1948, the country has been on a war footing. Even though this has not always been the case. From battling to free itself from a British-controlled mandate, to fighting off a host of Arab neighbour’s intent on its destruction, to then building the Middle East’s premier democracy, under the watchful support of the United States.

The Promised Land will chart the country’s modern-day history – from her early leaders who had survived the Holocaust in Europe and established the state in 1948, to those brilliant young military commanders who would conduct successful wars against Syria, Egypt, Jordan and the P.L.O. From the political disaster of the Suez Crisis in 1956, to the terrorist strikes at the Munich Olympic Games in 1974, through to the heroic rescue of Jewish hostages at Entebbe Airport in1976. The multiple attempts at a peace settlement -normally overseen by the White House, to finally, the rise of a more extreme political base within the country that has encouraged the settler movement and delivered Benjamin Netanyahu to become the primary driver of conflict within the tinderbox region.
